Functionality of Basic Electronic Components

Basic electronic parts are essential for any device that runs on electricity. These components allow current to flow through a circuit, powering the device. Each component has a specific function in the overall circuit. Here is the basic functionality of each component.

Resistors

A resistor is a passive electronic component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. In electronic circuits, resistors help to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, divide voltages, and create impedance matching. Various resistor types are available, from inexpensive carbon-film and metal-film to exact and stable thin-film types. You can also use resistors as loads in electronic drivers, shunt resistors to measure current, and voltage dividers.

As electronic devices become smaller, the physical size of the resistors that you use must also decrease. However, even with the miniaturization of electronic parts, the functionality of essential electronic components remains the same. Resistors are still used to regulate current flow and create impedance in electronic circuits.

TDC1016

The TDC1016 is an electronic component that helps electronic circuits to speed up the conversion rate of digital signals to analog signals. It is a 10-bit, 20Msps converter that can help dual supply operation +/- 5.0V, TTL compatible mode.

In addition, the TDC1016 has a voltage output and does not require an amplifier. It also has a disabling control, which can help to force full-scale or zero input data. However, you cannot use a TDC1016 to invert input data.

Diodes

A diode is an electronic component that allows current to flow in one direction only. Diodes are used in electronic circuits to rectify alternating current (AC) and to convert it into direct current (DC). In addition, diodes can help as protection devices to prevent electronic circuits from getting damaged by reverse currents.

Diodes are made up of two semiconductor materials, one that is conducive and one that is non-conductive. The conductive material is the anode, and the non-conductive material is the cathode. When you apply a voltage to the diode, the anode will allow current to flow while the cathode will block current from flowing through it.

Inductors

Components inductors are electronic components that store energy in an electric field. They help electronic circuits to block direct current and to adjust signal levels. In addition, you can use inductors as filters to remove unwanted noise from electronic signals.

Inductors are made up of two metal plates separated by a dielectric material. When you apply a voltage to the capacitor, an electric field gets created between the two metal plates. The size of the inductor determines the amount of energy that can get stored in the electric field.

Integrated Circuits

An integrated circuit (IC) is an electronic component that contains many transistors on a small chip. ICs help electronic circuits perform various functions, such as amplifiers, switches, and timers.

The size of an IC depends on the number of transistors it contains. A minor IC might contain a few thousand transistors while a large IC can contain millions of transistors. ICs get classified into two main categories: digital and analog. Digital ICs help to perform logical operations, and analog ICs help to amplify electronic signals.
